George Takei and Freelancer

For those of you who didn’t recognize his unmistakeable voice… George Takei was part of the cast who lent their voices to Freelancer. Yep. It’s even listed on IMDB.com Freelancer on IMDb.com. Personally, I think it is great that he took the gig, what with his connection to Star Trek as Sulu. It is just one more of the little details that made Freelancer great.

Who still plays a 9 year old video game?

Just like the title asks… who still plays 9 year old video game? Freelancer game – YouTube. More than a few, apparently. That link takes you to a Youtube listing, and as of January 2nd, 2012, people are still posting videos of game play. Not everyone knows how, so it is only a small portion of players who can and will make videos like these.
Why is it then, that Microsoft abandoned the game? Microsoft killed the central database (that everyone connected to in order to see the multi-player servers that had been set up) so an imaginative individual created a patch to bypass that central connection. There are still modding communities dedicated to keeping the game fresh, adding new content and gameplay options. Microsoft even started and then abandoned Freelancer 2, the third in the trilogy (Starlancer, Freelancer, etc). With such a dedicated following to the game, why would Microsoft abandon it?
For those who would want to play, there are still copies available Google shopping for Freelancer and eBay shopping for Freelancer and Amazon shopping for Freelancer so it isn’t like there aren’t people still selling it. There are countless BitTorrent sites that have the game available for download, not that I’m going to link to any of them here. Microsoft could easily team up with Steam, implement the fixes out there to be able to play the game on Windows 7, and start making money again. Why wouldn’t they?
There’s no dust on my installation, that’s for sure.

What do you get when you combine Freelancer, Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, Stargate Atlantis, Firefly, Andromeda, and a few other Sci-Fi genres? You get Nightstalker’s Universe, that’s what.
That’s right. If you want to fly an X-wing, running missions against the Empire… or you’ve always been dying to have your own YT-1300 (hint-Falcon) to smuggle goods off Tatooine, then this mod is for you.
If you’ve ever wanted to captain the Enterprise (you pick… constellation class, galaxy class, sovereign class, etc) fighting Klingons… or you’ve wanted to captain a Romulan Warbird at cloak, looking for trouble to stir up, then this mod is for you.
If you’ve ever wanted to be within a Shadow Crab, giving it to the Minbari, or you’ve always thought you would have done well in the Psi-Corp, then this mod is for you.
If you’ve ever wanted your own Firefly class freighter, then this mod is for you.
You see where I’m going with this?
Now, the universe itself is huge. All the genres have multiple systems dedicated to that tangent. Although first impressions might be that the universe is too large, you quickly reach the conclusion… if you want to spend time flying, running missions, trading, and you want to do it alone, you CAN! However, if you want to be social, and spend your time with other players, you can do that too. The universe is large enough to accommodate both concepts.
There is no official FLMM installer (a zip file, with the extension renamed), but all you need to do is expand the contents of the download into a directory within the FLMM Mods folder. Run FLMM, activate the Mod, and connect.
